We would like to introduce MA Education student, Deepika Jain. Deepika is a wonderful volunteer who we recently awarded a Silver Certificate to for a very impressive 80 hours of volunteering at the last Volun-cheers Awards. Since then, Deepika has recorded an additional 34 hours, now taking her total volunteering hours up to 114, this is amazing. We were delighted when Deepika came forward to be a volunteering case study and have really enjoyed reading about her experiences and tops tips for future volunteers. Embracing the opportunities that have presented themselves, Deepika has had such a positive impact on those around her and helped so many people. We wish Deepika every success with her graduation in January 2026 and her future plans to have a career in accountancy. “I chose to volunteer because I wanted to give back to my community while developing personally. The English Language Café allowed me to support people learning English, helping them gain confidence and feel included while learning about different cultures. At the Unicorn Centre, I enjoyed assisting riders and seeing how horses can build independence and confidence for people with disabilities. Boro Angels appealed to me because it focuses on care and compassion for vulnerable people on nights out, giving practical support or simply a listening ear. Each role has helped me connect with others and develop valuable skills.
A typical day in my volunteering roles always involves supporting people and helping them feel welcome or safe. At the English Language Café, I greet learners, encourage conversation, and help them practise English in a relaxed setting. At the Unicorn Centre, I assist riders during lessons, offer encouragement, and help with stable duties. With Boro Angels, I prepare supplies and help people in the town centre, offering practical support or a listening ear. Each role allows me to connect with others, provide support, and make a positive difference in their experience.
Through volunteering, I have developed confidence, empathy, and a sense of community. At the English Language Café, I learnt patience and active listening while supporting learners. At the Unicorn Centre, I gained teamwork and responsibility through assisting riders and practical tasks. With Boro Angels, I experienced the importance of compassion and staying calm in unpredictable situations. Overall, volunteering has taught me that even small acts of support can make a real difference.
What I enjoy most about volunteering is seeing the positive impact I can have on others, even in small ways. At the English Language Café, I love helping learners gain confidence in speaking English. At the Unicorn Centre, I enjoy walking alongside riders and celebrating their achievements. With Boro Angels, I like offering practical help or simply being someone to talk to. Overall, I enjoy connecting with people and making a real difference.
My advice for future volunteers is to be open, patient, and willing to learn. Don’t worry if you don’t know everything at first - ask questions and observe, and you’ll quickly find your place. Listening and showing kindness are the most important skills, as small gestures can make a big difference to those you’re supporting. Take responsibility for your tasks, no matter how small, and remember that every contribution counts. Finally, reflect on your experiences. Volunteering helps you grow personally as well as making a positive impact on others”.
