At the Middlesbrough Voluntary Development Agency volunteer forum, Teesside & District Society for the Blind delivered a presentation about the services they offer and their volunteering opportunities. Since 1960 they have served visually impaired people living in the Teesside area. Regular contact is kept with nearly 2000 visually impaired people, with numbers continuing to rise.
During the presentation, we were given the opportunity to use simulator cards and glasses which provided the impression of the effects of vision loss due to conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataract. It was interesting to find out practical tips for guiding visually impaired people in most everyday situations.
Teesside & District Society for the Blind are on the volun-tees platform and have three volunteering opportunities on offer. They also provide thorough training to their volunteers which is a great addition to any CV. Perhaps you could help in the role of activities and events helper, home visitor or volunteer gardener. An extra volunteer at the activity centre could mean that one more person could have a game of bingo or game of cards. The help that people receive from the volunteers is invaluable and the management committee, the manager and staff at Teesside & District Society for the Blind are very grateful for any offer of help.
