After reading and watching the amazing volunteering work that Ellie Pearson, Early Childhood Studies student has been involved in, we were delighted when Ellie agreed to be a volunteering case study. An inspiring read from one of our students who is making such a difference in the community. Well done and thank you to Ellie (and Toby) along with Wag and Company. 

“I volunteer with WAG and Company after seeing the incredible work they do online, bringing companionship to elderly individuals through dog visits. Losing my granny in 2019 made me truly understand how isolating it can be for older people, and I wanted to contribute to making a difference. WAG and Company’s mission of reducing loneliness through the power of human-animal bonds resonated deeply with me, and I knew it was an organization where I could make a meaningful impact.

A typical day in my volunteering role involves visiting Shirley. I bring my dog, Toby, along, as his presence brings her a lot of joy and companionship. During our visits, we chat about various things, share stories, and simply enjoy each other’s company. Toby loves the attention, and it’s heartwarming to see how much happiness he brings. These visits are not only a great way to provide companionship but also an opportunity to brighten someone’s day through conversation and the comfort of a friendly dog.

I have learned how powerful companionship can be in reducing loneliness and improving well-being. Spending time with Shirley has shown me the importance of meaningful connections, no matter how small they may seem. I’ve also gained a deeper understanding of the challenges older people face, particularly those who may not have regular visitors. Additionally, I’ve seen firsthand the incredible impact that animals like Toby can have, providing comfort and joy in a way that words sometimes can’t.

What I enjoy most about volunteering is seeing the joy that Toby brings to Shirley during our visits. It is incredibly rewarding to witness how a simple act can brighten someone’s day. I love our conversations; it feels like I’m not just giving my time but also gaining so much in return. Knowing that our visits make a real difference in her life makes the experience truly special, and it reinforces why I wanted to volunteer in the first place.

I have developed strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in building relationships. I have improved my ability to listen and be empathetic, understanding the importance of companionship for those who may feel isolated. This experience has strengthened my sense of responsibility and commitment, as consistency is important in forming a trusting bond with the people we visit.

In the future, I plan to work with young children, as I am passionate about supporting their development and well-being. Volunteering with WAG and Company has given me valuable experience in building connections and understanding the impact of emotional support.  I hope to apply the skills I’ve gained, such as empathy, communication, and patience, in a setting where I can make a positive difference in children’s lives.”
