Hearing about your time with FoodCycle Middlesbrough is certainly inspiring. Mohammed has volunteered a staggering 110 hours to various community projects, and we are very proud to share the case study with you.

“I am very passionate about addressing food waste, which is why I decided to volunteer with FoodCycle. The goal of FoodCycle is to transform excess food into wholesome meals for those in need. By assisting those who are hungry and lonely, I hoped to directly affect change. I have met a variety of individuals and improved my communication and teamwork abilities. It is a fulfilling experience that truly improves and transforms people's lives.

As a member of the hosting team at FoodCycle, my role is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for guests. A typical day starts with setting up the dining area, arranging tables, and ensuring everything is clean and organised. I greet guests warmly, show them to their seats, and engage in friendly conversations to make them feel comfortable. I serve food, offer refills, and assist with any needs. Afterwards I help with clearing tables and tidying up. My role is about more than just serving food—it’s about building connections and fostering a sense of community.

Through volunteering at FoodCycle, I have learned the importance of community, empathy, and teamwork. I have developed strong communication skills by engaging with guests from diverse backgrounds.  I have learned about food waste and sustainability, realising how small actions can make a big impact. Working with a team has improved my problem-solving and adaptability skills, as every session is different. Most importantly, I have learned the power of kindness and how a warm meal and conversation can brighten someone’s day.

What I enjoy most about volunteering at FoodCycle is the sense of connection and community. Seeing guests smile and knowing that I’ve helped create a welcoming space where they can enjoy a meal and conversation is incredibly rewarding. I love meeting people from different backgrounds, hearing their stories and building relationships.

My advice for future volunteers is to approach your opportunity with an open mind and a positive attitude. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance, it is how we learn and develop our skills. Lastly, enjoy the process and take pride in the difference you’re making!
