Learning By Heart is a small nonprofit set up by a Durham student, providing 1to1 school subject tutoring in exchange for pay as you feel donations to educational charities. Classes are delivered remotely using videoconferencing platforms, so we are able to reach pupils all over the country. Our proceeds are currently split between our two partner organisations: 50% go to CAMFED, the Campaign for Female Education, who work to increase the accessibility of and revolutionise girls’ education in Sub-Saharan Africa; and the other 50% to go Education Cannot Wait, the United Nations global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises.
Tutoring with Learning By Heart is a flexible opportunity that can be arranged around your work commitments. We just ask for a minimum commitment of 1 hour/week to allow you to maintain one pupil.
Educational inequality is one of the biggest barriers to global development. Currently, the attainment gap between pupils from higher and lower income backgrounds in the UK is widening for the first time since 2007, while across the world both class and gender cotninue to negatively affect educational outcomes. For example, women are hugely overrepresented in the world's illiterate population, making up 2/3 of around 770 million illiterate adults.
The Learning By Heart model is an important tool for social change, as it supports pupils in the UK with an accessible tutoring service, while simultaneously fundraising for international projects which carry out vital work to combat these issues across the world.
