The Literacy Pirates
We take children on voyages as readers and writers, and we’re on the lookout for volunteers to join the virtual crew.
ABOUT US:

Through our term-long, after-school programme, we develop the literacy, confidence and perseverance of children aged 9-13, who are falling behind in class and have fewer opportunities in their personal lives, so that they can succeed at school and beyond.

Approximately 20 children from different schools attend one after-school session per week via our specially created online platform to practise their reading and writing. We also professionally publish their work so that every Young Pirate finishes the programme a published author.

WHY OUR WORK MATTERS:

Children on average make 5 to 6 months progress in their reading age each term with us. The children we work with are between one to four years behind, and making just four months of progress each academic year. That means we are making four times the progress they can make at school alone.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN OUR PEOPLE:

Enthusiam, patience and fun!
