As a University we have a civic responsibility that includes fostering active citizenship, ethical values, and community engagement among students, faculty, and staff. This is of particular importance as we are situated in an area with very high rates of depravation, where many people suffer numerous inequalities which impact on health and well-being.
We provide a volunteering opportunity for Sport & Exercise Science and, some Science & Allied Health, undergraduate and postgraduate students to develop their subject specific and transferable employability skills. We do this via the public facing clinics we offer, which are part of the wider Intergrated Care Acedmey with the School of Health & Social Care.
Volunteers get to:
- Conduct a wide range of tests which evaluate health status and physical fitness.
- Communicate test results to clients both verbally and in the form of written reports.
Through education and outreach, we aim to create socially responsible individuals prepared to contribute positively to society. This involves encouraging volunteerism, promoting diversity and inclusion, supporting local community development, and addressing social issues. We can partner with local organizations to address community needs, offer service-learning opportunities, and engage in research that benefits society. By upholding these responsibilities, universities contribute to the well-being and progress of their communities and empower students to become proactive, engaged citizens.
The UK faces various public health threats, including the rise of chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, largely driven by lifestyle factors such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and smoking. Mental health issues, particularly anxiety and depression, are increasing, especially among young people. Infectious diseases like influenza, COVID-19, and antimicrobial resistance also pose risks, requiring vigilant public health responses. Environmental factors, including air pollution and climate change, exacerbate health problems. Additionally, health inequalities impact vulnerable populations, making access to quality healthcare a critical concern. Addressing these threats demands integrated, preventive, and community-based health approaches.
The Health & Perfomance Centre remit is to assess health status and educate on issues of Physical activity, exercise and sport and health improvement
Physical activity and health education are vital pillars of public health, playing a key role in preventing and chronic diseases, improving mental well-being, and enhancing overall quality of life. Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of numerous health issues, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some cancers. It also boosts mental health by reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. these factors can reduce the long-term burden on healthcare systems.
Health education complements physical activity by informing individuals about the benefits of an active lifestyle and teaching them how to make informed choices. It raises awareness of healthy behaviors, nutritional needs, and the risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Education empowers people to take control of their health and understand the importance of regular activity in achieving a balanced lifestyle.
Together, physical activity and health education create a foundation for community health initiatives, promote well-being, and encourage social interaction. By integrating these aspects into schools, workplaces, and communities, public health programs can address health disparities, inspire lifelong habits, and build healthier, more resilient societies prepared to tackle future health challenges.
