Open Country began in 1990 as a ‘temporary’ project; 35 years later Open Country has developed into a small charity with huge aims! On an average week we run up to 26 countryside activities, catering for a range of abilities. Our head office is based in Harrogate; we have a second hub in Wakefield based and we’re opening our third hub in Teesside later this coming 2025. Over the years we have been recognised by many awards, including the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and are cherished and loved by our members.
Open Country has grown to run up to 26 different countryside activities weekly, catering to a range of abilities from a variety of different backgrounds. With hubs in Harrogate, Wakefield, and a new office in Tees Valley, we offer activities such as walking, tandem cycling, and nature conservation. Our efforts not only enhance the well-being of their 500 members but also contribute significantly to environmental conservation, with initiatives like tree planting and habitat improvement, as well as working on all-important access projects. Supported by around 170 volunteers, our charity fosters inclusivity, community engagement, and a deeper connection to nature for individuals who might otherwise face barriers to outdoor experiences.
Our Opportunities
