Take a look at our latest Do Good Feel Good volunteering event, where we spent a rewarding afternoon with the amazing CIC Nitelight , an organisation doing vital work to support people experiencing homelessness. Their commitment to helping others and strengthening our community is truly inspiring, and we were proud to support their mission in such a practical, hands-on way.
Together, we transformed discarded crisp packets into life-saving insulated sleeping bags. Something as simple as a sleeping bag can cost a small fortune, yet these versions are both waterproof and warmer, thanks to the foil acting as an effective insulator. Did you know, it takes around 150 crisp packets to create just one sleeping bag.
We got to volunteering right away, cleaning the packets, ironing them together, and adding a protective outer layer to make sure they stayed strong and durable. A huge thank you to Amanda, who oversees this project every week. You made us feel incredibly welcome and supported, and it was a real pleasure getting to know you and learning more about the important work you do in the hub.
The atmosphere throughout the session was relaxed and full of positive energy. There was plenty of laughter, especially when Kunal insisted every line of crisps had to be the same, and when Momina and Alisha’s packets stubbornly refused to bond together — alongside great teamwork and a strong sense of purpose. Knowing these sleeping bags would soon be going to people who need them most made the experience even more meaningful.
A massive shout-out goes to the students who took part. Your enthusiasm, generosity, and willingness to give your time made this event so special. You showed that doing good really does feel good, and that when we come together, we can achieve great things. Thank you.
We are now exploring whether this project could be duplicated on campus, as it would be a fantastic way to bring staff and students together for such a worthwhile cause.
