Our latest Do Good, Feel Good initiative saw us taking part in a community litter pick, and we were more than happy to get involved.
We teamed up with The Community Hub at Newport to support the ‘Keep Boro Tidy’ campaign. Despite the windy weather and a little rain, spirits remained high as we spent the hour clearing litter along Derwent Street and across to St Paul’s Road. In total, we collected more than 10 bags of rubbish, a fantastic team effort that made an immediate difference to the local area.
Afterwards, we were joined by Andy, an Environment Enforcement Officer from Middlesbrough Council (North). He shared insight into his role, which focuses on maintaining local environmental quality by investigating issues such as fly-tipping, littering and graffiti, and issuing Fixed Penalty Notices where necessary. As part of the wider Public Protection and Neighbourhood Safety teams, Environment Enforcement Officers play a vital role in improving town cleanliness, safety and compliance with environmental regulations. It was encouraging to learn more about the Council’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high environmental standards across our communities.
Activities like this complement Teesside University’s environmental courses in sustainability and green technology, reinforcing the importance of taking practical steps to protect and improve our local environment. Taking part in a litter pick is a simple way to give back, get outdoors and make a visible difference, it is good for wellbeing, great for team spirit, and a positive step towards a cleaner, greener community.
