I volunteer with the Battle Re-enactment Society in the Students’ Union as I wanted to be involved with student life and help to improve the student experience, and hopefully gain some skills along the way. Here I teach people general crafts; cloth making, leather crafting and shield making to name a few, as well as taking part in re-enactment events around the UK and occasionally teaching in schools. I also volunteer as the Chair of the Society Federation at the Students’ Union. An average day would consist of talking with committee members of societies, logging any issues they come to me with and talking with the activities team to help remedy the problems. I also run the SocFed meetings and set the agenda with the President Activities and Activities Co-ordinator.I have learned a lot through volunteering - about public speaking and general communication skills. I’ve also received training in mental health awareness, first-aid and basic resilience training. Through volunteering, I’ve grown a lot as a person, and encountered opportunities that I would never have had without it. I’ve gained skills in marketing, both digitally and physically, thanks to running our society pages and making fliers and posters for freshers, along with promoting the society at SU events. I’ve learned how to put together an agenda, chair meetings, organise charity events and fundraisers. I have also completed the Volun-tees Platinum Plus Award which has helped me recognise all the valuable skills I have gained through volunteering. I’ve enjoyed lots of things through volunteering - getting together with members of the SU community and raising money for charity through different events. For anyone interested in volunteering I would say it’s a fantastic learning experience, and no matter what you choose to do, you’re helping to improve someone else’s experience along with your own.I’m planning to do a Masters at Teesside, and I'm in the process of starting up my own company. With any luck, I’ll also start lecturing part-time once I’m qualified.I’m currently on an internship at the university as a CreatorLab Fellow, and have spent time with the Careers Adviser from Student Futures editing my CV, preparing for interviews and such, as well as working towards the employability award. I would really recommend seeking advice from the university Careers Advisers. They are a great help to personal confidence when going into an interview or thinking about general career and employment prospects.
