To help people with varying support needs, such as learning disabilities, autism, or mental health difficulties, and other particular barriers, to access their community and build confidence along the way. SUITABLE FOR WE MODULE

What You'll Do:

Volunteers will be matched with a client, and will meet up at a public space, whether that be a coffee shop, library, community centre etc, and spend time getting to know them and supporting them with whatever activities they would like to do. The schedule of meet-ups will be decided by volunteer and client, and can be flexible to suit your needs (e.g. 1 hour per week, varying days/times each week). We aim to match people based on what interests they have, to give volunteers a chance to share their skills and interests with others. Whether it is going for a coffee, or a walk, an event or an activity, every little meet up has such a positive impact.

We currently have volunteers who take part in a range of activities including playing pool at a local venue, going to the cinema, meeting for coffees, go to Friday Friends club, attend a weekly craft club, attend a running club, going swimming, walks in the park, supporting at the gym (for confidence), badminton, etc. There is a range of activities and groups that people access. Some clients require support with travelling (e.g. volunteer getting the bus or taxi with them).

Volunteers are not required to give lifts using their own car, and are not required to enter client's homes. All out of pocket and travel expenses incurred during volunteers hours will be subsidised by Catalyst. Catalyst will provide each volunteer with a DBS check, free of charge.

Why You'll Love It:
Great experience for those interested in a career in health and social care. 1-1 experience with adults who have varying support needs.  See first hand the positive effect person centred support can have. Positively impact someone's mental health and wellbeing. Share your knowledge and skills with others. Training opportunities for volunteers. No prior experience required.
What You'll Learn:
Build communication skills, learning to communicate effectively with people who may struggle to engage. Adult Safeguarding Level 2 training. Equality and Diversity training. Help people to build confidence in social settings. Helping people make their own choices and supporting them with their personal goals. Provide people with a new direction in life, opening up a range of activities leading to increased self-esteem and self-confidence.
What We're Looking For:
Some awareness of learning disabilities and/or autism would be useful but not essential Ability to support, encourage and enable others to fulfil tasks and activities Friendly, respectful and non-judgemental attitude towards people who use the service and their needs Demonstrated good listening and personal skills Reliable, trustworthy and proactive
