The Collections Project Volunteer is a role new to Preston Park where you will be able to assist the Dynamic Project Team in identifying, assessing, packing and researching objects housed at our off-site store.

What You'll Do: 

Assisting the Collections team in the documentation of objects in preparation for a full store move.

Sorting and packing artefacts, conducting condition checks and basic object conservation, including object cleaning and care under direction of the Collections team.

Aiding with the movement of packed objects both smaller items in boxes and larger items on pallets, in-store and off-site.

To correctly handle objects according to training given where necessary, using gloves or specialist equipment.

Input data on to computer systems such as Excel, Word or Modes Collections Management system.

Assistance with engagement opportunities related to the project, such as presentations, workshops or object handling sessions with the staff (optional).

What You'll Learn: 
By undergoing this rationalisation project, we aim to gain more understanding of the collections we hold, from physical descriptions to an appreciation of the object’s unique history, to move our collections into more appropriate storage and to assess the significance of objects within the collection.
What We're Looking For: 
An interest in history, local heritage of Stockton and Tees Valley and the museum sector. Some ICT skills, although training will be given. Attention to detail. A friendly and enthusiastic manner. The ability to work independently, and as part of a team, under guidance of the Collections team. Willing to learn new skills related specifically to Collections care of the museum’s objects and archive. Ability to handle and move objects safely, with direction from Collections Team.
