The Heugh Battery Museum tells the story of the Bombardment of the Hartlepools, which took place on Wednesday 16th December 1914, when the guns of the Heugh Battery and neighbouring Lighthouse Battery were engaged in ship-to-shore combat with the German navy.
The site of the Heugh Gun Battery has been a military position since the 17th century. It was restored by volunteers in the early 2000’s and the Heugh Battery Museum now proudly preserves the only First World War battlefield in Britain.
The museum boasts a large and eclectic collection of military artefacts and artillery pieces from throughout history. Our friendly volunteers are on hand to help visitors understand more about the objects on display.
Our Opportunities
Poppy Tea Rooms is a unique museum tea room located within a World War 1 museum. Our visitors can enjoy delicious tea and cakes while exploring exhibits about the history of the museum and the impact of World War 1 on tea culture.
This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors and has a passion for gardening to contribute their skills and time to a historic museum site.
The Kitchen Volunteer (Baking) will be responsible for baking a variety of goods to be sold in the museum's cafe
