We were more than happy to help The Community Hub at Newport and Middlesbrough Council Waste Engagement Team with a ‘Keep Boro Tidy’ Litter pick. The sun was shining (but not as brightly as our hi viz vests), so we spent an hour tidying the streets of Middlesbrough to make it a better place for everyone.
During the event we engaged with residents who were chatting to us about environmental issues, everyone was pleased to see the volunteers taking such a positive approach to helping the area. The Keep Boro Tidy initiative is all about encouraging and helping Middlesbrough residents, businesses and community groups to help tidy up their communities, whether it’s picking litter, sprucing a grass verge, or giving the local park railings a lick of paint. It was amazing to see how much rubbish our group of ten managed to collect in such a short space of time.
Volunteering anywhere has so many benefits but getting involved in a community litter pick can help with your mental and physical health, a great way to get outdoors, teamwork, communication and provide a great opportunity to get to know each other. On the way back to the university there certainly was a buzz of knowing we had achieved something great.
