We are delighted to share that our next volunteering case study shines a spotlight on Mayowa Eniola Labiran. Mayowa is currently studying for an MA in Digital Media and Communications at Teesside University and is set to graduate in May 2026.

With an incredible 332 hours logged on the Volun-tees platform, Mayowa has shown an outstanding commitment to volunteering. Her time and energy have supported a wide range of organisations, including Age UK, FoodCycle, Deafblind UK, the North Yorkshire Moors, as well as on-campus projects and events at Teesside University.

In recognition of this dedication, Mayowa was selected to represent Teesside University at the APPG International Students Day at the House of Commons. A day dedicated to celebrating the contributions, achievements, and experiences of students from around the world.

Mayowa is truly a joy to be around, her warm smile lights up any room, and thoughtful presence makes everyone feel heard and valued. It was wonderful to read how meaningful a role volunteering has played in Mayowa’s journey so far, and we hope you will take a moment to read her inspiring story here.

I have always felt a strong desire to reach out and help people whenever I can, and to put a smile on someone’s face. This is what led me to volunteering at the Dementia Hub, where meaningful activities are created for people living with dementia. Encouraging them, listening to their stories and sharing laughter together has been one of the most rewarding experiences.

FoodCycle is equally special to me, as it brings people together through good food and great conversation. Being part of preparing meals, hosting guests and seeing the joy it brings is something I truly love. The atmosphere is always welcoming, and it is incredible how much a shared meal and friendly conversation can mean to someone.

I also volunteer with Deafblind UK as a wellbeing phone caller. I joined because even though those I speak with may not be able to see us, the conversations we share are deeply meaningful. Through these calls, I’m able to offer companionship, listen with care, share in their challenges and provide support wherever possible.

A typical day at the Dementia Hub usually begins in the morning, meeting with the hosts to plan activities for the sessions and then working together to bring them to life. At FoodCycle, we prepare meals, plan what to cook and make sure everyone knows their role before coming together to serve the community. When hosting, we arrange the venue, prepare hot and cold drinks and get ready to welcome guests with warm conversation. With Deafblind UK, my focus is simply on being present, listening carefully, offering reassurance and connecting with people through thoughtful phone conversations.

Volunteering has taught me how to build a life rooted in empathy, purpose and a deep understanding that we all belong to one another. It has done more than help my community, it has rebuilt me. I have learned that human connection needs no translation and that compassion is a universal language, spoken through a shared meal, a patient presence or a calm voice in the dark. Alongside this, I have developed valuable skills such as planning, organisation, communication, creativity, confidence and the ability to motivate others.

What I enjoy most is being around people and having the opportunity to make someone’s day brighter, whether that is through a smile, kind words or encouragement when it is needed most.
