The volunteering team had the pleasure of visiting Young at Heart ULO last week and witnessed firsthand the amazing work of this organisation and the difference it makes to those who attend. Thanks to our recent Do Good, Feel Good event, we were able to donate some handcrafted Easter chicks and chocolates that went down a treat.

Established originally in 2010, Young at Heart has been supporting people living with Dementia and their care partners for many years. It provides regular opportunities for people to come together, develop support networks in a safe and friendly environment whilst taking part in a range of different, meaningful activities to holistically support the quality of life.  

Whilst we were there, the attendees were enjoying a talk from the local library and looking at archives from the Stockton area. The care providers were in a separate space, supporting each other over a cuppa and having a good laugh.

Some feedback included:

“I like that my mum has somewhere to go as a social group which is led very well. She has made friendships and always comes away happy. I find the groups help to share problems and experiences of situations with each other - people who are in the same situation as us."

We asked what they would like to see from our volunteers, but the friendly group they are, the conversation soon turned to what they could do to help them. Each member of the group said how this type of volunteering opportunity would help to develop communication skills, teamwork, empathy, confidence.

There are three volunteering opportunities available here. It is encouraged that you visit beforehand to see if this is a good fit for you. Perhaps you have a flare for; crafts, music, group games, baking, dance to enhance the group. Whatever your passion or talent, this would be welcomed and nurtured by the lovely people at Young at Heart.
