Could you be a Community Champion?

 

Community Champions are adults from culturally diverse communities who have completed free of charge training to build their skills, knowledge and confidence.

 

The training has been designed to allow adults to then feel confident with support, to lead their own visits to the North York Moors and to create networks with local National Park communities, staff and other community champion participants.

 

Participants will:

  • Learn about the National Parks
  • Enjoy guided walks
  • Inspire activities and events you would like to do in the National Park
  • Learn new skills and inspire others to enjoy the beauty of the National Park
  • Meet like-minded people.

 

The training will include 3 one-day sessions and 1 residential weekend and will cover:

  • An introduction to National Parks and their special characteristics
  • Visits to a local working farm / sites of interest; navigation training; health and safety training
  • Support in planning and holding a visit with your chosen group to the park
  • A celebration day to reflect on the programme
  • The chance to visit other National Parks and meet with like-minded people.

 

When are the next training dates?

 

The next training starts in June 2025.

  • Day 1: Saturday 21 June 2025
  • Day 2: Saturday 5 July 2025
  • Days 3 and 4 (residential):  Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 September 2025
  • Day 5: Saturday 4 October 2025
  • Day 6:  To be confirmed

 

Community Champion FAQs

 

Is  Community Champion a voluntary role?

 

Being a Community Champion is a voluntary role. Participants will be expected to attend all training sessions.

Is the training free? Will expenses be reimbursed?

 

Yes, the course is free. Funding is available to cover travel costs and also any equipment you may need. Food and beverages will be provided.

What happens on completion of the training?

 

Once a Community Champion has completed the training they will be invited to design their own event. There will also an opportunity to meet fellow Community Champions from other programmes and join Peak District Mosaic.

 

Can anyone apply to be a Community Champion in the North York Moors?

 

Participants will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You must live within Teesside
  • You must be 18 or over
  • You must be able to attend all training sessions (should you wish to attend a training session at another National Park we can accommodate this)
  • You must have an interest in leading groups in the outdoors.

What You'll Learn: 
Our vision is that everyone should be confident to visit and enjoy our National Parks. This means that everyone can receive the health and wellbeing benefits of spending time in National Parks and has the knowledge to help protect them.   Our Championing National Parks for Everyone project is led by the charity Peak District Mosaic who are working with the North York Moors National Park, Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Peak District National Park.  Derbyshire Dales Council for Voluntary Service are also a project partner, working to help build capacity and infrastructure.
